Our nervous system is a giant sensory organ.
It is constantly gathering information about the state of our bodies, our environment, our relationships, and our place in the world- whether or not we are conscious of it.
All this information is used by our subconscious brain to decide in any given moment if we should feel calm or threatened, how we should respond to events, and how we interact with people in our lives.
A highly regulated nervous system will make wiser decisions about how to navigate the complex stressors of our daily lives. It will help us make more helpful decisions about when we should push through and when we rest- when we should connect and when we should withdraw. A healthy nervous system helps us intuitively choose the better of the options we have.
Unfortunately, most of us living in the contemporary western world do not have a well regulated nervous system- it has been damaged and overworked from years of trauma, oppression, and just daily life stress.
The good news is, brains and bodies are highly flexible, and always hold the potential to change. Through the practice of body focused mental health therapy we can learn to modulate and tonify the nervous system to work with us- not against us.
